The Fish Quarantine and Inspection Agency (FQIA/BKIPM) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MoMAF), with support from ARISE+ Indonesia, has concluded a five-day capacity-building workshop on methods for testing residues, contaminants and heavy metals according to the European Union legislation and requirements.
The United States of America (USA) is the second most active user of trade remedies, and Indonesian products have been the subject of a considerable number of USA trade remedy investigations, mostly involving antidumping (AD) and countervailing duties (CVD). Some twenty USA AD and CVD orders are outstanding against Indonesian products, and four were issued in 2021 alone. The orders remain in place indefinitely, and at least one currently in effect was entered in the last century. And the duties charged can be prohibitively high – as much as three figures.
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a protected brand whose value-proposition is based on exceptional quality and unique characteristics. The reputation of such product is associated with its geographic origin. A GI also implies a certification process that guarantees that the product has been produced according to specific requirements and quality standards. When buying a GI product, consumers expect the GI brand promise. How can producers guarantee and deliver their brand promise? How can they assure their product quality and authenticity, especially when the consumers already pay a premium price due to GI's added value? This is where internal control plans and traceability are put into play.

The training was organised by Fish Quarantine and Inspection Agency (FQIA/BKIPM) under the MoMAF with support from ARISE+ Indonesia. The training aimed to strengthen laboratory personnel's capacity, knowledge and competence.
Representatives of 17 Geographical Indication Protection Communities (MPIGs) took part in a two-day workshop in Jakarta on 23-24 May 2022. The sensitisation training was held following the participation of the MPIGs in the promotional expo F+B Indonesia, 18-21 May 2022, at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta.
