Trade remedy policy is crucial to supporting domestic producers from unforeseen import surges or unfair trade practices from overseas businesses, which cause injury to the domestic industry. On the other hand, introducing trade remedies can impact downstream industries, consumers, and even the wider macroeconomy. Therefore, the policymaking process of investigating trade remedies should be carried out carefully and objectively based on reliable data and robust methodology.

As an archipelagic country with an ocean covering more than two-thirds of the country's area, building a sustainable ocean economy is vital for Indonesia. A comprehensive strategy is required to manage and utilize Indonesia's vast ocean resources and marine-based economic activities for the welfare of all levels of society. This is especially important given that unsustainable practices of the ocean economy have resulted in environmental challenges and marine degradation, which can impact coastal livelihood and the economy. Therefore, transitioning to a blue economy provides an opportunity to boost GDP growth while also achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting sustainable consumption and production, sustainable industrialization, environmental and biodiversity preservation, and social inclusivity through poverty reduction and job creation.

Under the auspices of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the Directorate General of National Export Development (DGNED) of the Ministry of Trade, the ARISE+ Indonesia programme virtually launched the Indonesian Geographical Indication Show (IGIS) 2022 on Friday (13/05). The launch of IGIS 2022 whose tagline is "Enhancing the Value of Indonesian High Quality Agri-food Products through the Spectrum of Geographical Indications” was marked by a webinar entitled “Hello From The Spices Land”. The event gathered prominent figures from the culinary, gastronomy and retail industries, including Willian Wongso (Gastronomy Expert), Helianti Hilman (Founder of Javara), and Maria Suwarni (Marketing and Merchandising Director of Ranch Market Group).

More than 300 laboratory officials within the Directorate of Standardisation and Quality Control, the Ministry of Trade (MoT), and the Industrial Services Standardization and Policy Agency (BSKJI) within the Ministry of Industry (MoI) participated in the ISO/IEC 17025 Training held with the support from ARISE+ Indonesia. The training aimed to provide knowledge and understanding of the standard, enabling testing and calibration laboratories to operate competently and generate valid results. Compliance with the ISO/IEC 17025 will establish confidence in their work both nationally and internationally, which, in turn, improves international trade.

Market opportunities for ginger exports from Indonesia do exist. Demand for biopharmaceutical products is booming worldwide. According to ITC, the trade of oleoresins, the essential oil extracted from ginger, amounted to over US $ 833 million  in 2020 while EU imports were over US $ 213 million (for detail trade statistic data on ginger, please see the infographics above). The potential of the EU market was highlighted by the Indonesian trade attaches in the Netherlands and Spain who receive frequent enquiries on ginger. Price competition is prominent in this market, with Indonesian exporters facing strong competition from producers from China, India, Peru and Brazil. Indonesian prices are relatively high because of the high logistics costs as Indonesian ports are less well situated on world shipping line routes compared with competitors from China and Brazil. Small enterprises of the sector also face the challenge of meeting certification requirements as is many other sectors.

In collaboration with ARISE+ Indonesia, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) held kick-off meetings to commence the development of Grand Designs on Export Acceleration, Investment and Economic Cooperation. The separate kick-off meetings on Export Acceleration and Investment took place on Tuesday (12/04) in the morning and afternoon, while the kick-off of Economic Cooperation was held the following Monday (18/04).

The ongoing Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA) is expected to create a framework for enhancing trade and investment between Indonesia and the EU, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade in agricultural products, manufactured goods and services, providing, in turn, significant opportunities for trade and FDI between the countries, while supporting sustainable development objectives. The trade agreement is expected to increase the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) for both parties by around USD 5 billion for Indonesia and USD 3 billion for the EU. However, this potential could be hampered by the barriers to Trade in Services and Non-Tariff Measures for trade in goods. Therefore, reducing bilateral barriers to trade in services and non-tariff barriers to trade in goods should be a key result in the negotiations.
