On June 24, the Director of Export Development Cooperation in the Ministry of Trade, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, together with the Coordinator of International Cooperation at the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Fajar Sulaeman Taman, conducted a joint visit to Bali Amed Salt, one of the Indonesian Geographical Indications (GIs) supported by ARISE+ Indonesia.

The joint field visit had a triple objective; to look at the capacity development realised so far by the GI association, to discuss about future actions to develop of Indonesian GIs, including Bali Amed Salt, and to enhance cross-ministry coordination to empower GI communities.

Speaking at the joint visit, Mr Fajar said that DGIP’s main role was to support the communities in applying for GI certification. Thus, cooperation with other ministries was needed to support the GI promotion.

"I am thrilled that the DGNED, in this case, Ibu Made, is very enthusiastic in supporting the GI promotion," Mr Fajar said.

On a similar note, Ms Made welcomed the collaboration with the DGIP to strengthen and promote Indonesian GIs. She also made a suggestion to broaden the networks and coordination with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

"Cross-ministries and agencies coordination are very important to provide integrated support to GI communities," Ms Made said.

Visiting Bali Amed Salt for the first time, Ms Made admired and appreciated the tradition that the communities have preserved for producing salt. Speaking to the representatives of the Bali Amed Salt GI Association (Masyarakat Perlindungan Indikasi Geografis), Ms Made advised the communities to continue conserving the local knowledge and tradition.

"Indonesian Geographical Indications not only have great potential in promoting local speciality commodities but also in preserving our cultural heritage, local wisdom, traditions, and even environment," Ms Made said.
