The EU-funded ARISE+ Indonesia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade through the Directorate-General of National Export Development (DGNED), Trade Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid and the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in Barcelona, and the Directorate-General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, supported the showcase of selected Indonesian Geographical Indication (GI) products in the Indonesian Pavilion at the Alimentaria Exhibition, Barcelona, Spain, 4-7 April 2022.

To bring the taste and sensory experience of Indonesian GI-certified speciality spices, artisanal salts, tea and sugar to European consumers, ARISE+ Indonesia commissioned Indonesian Chef Bara Pattiradjawane to present daily onsite cooking shows featuring unique international culinary, including Spanish Albondigas, Hungarian Lecsó, and speciality Gingerbread. The Indonesian GIs booth and Chef Bara's cooking station were part of the Indonesian Pavillion.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of Spain Muhammad Najib officially opened the Indonesian Pavilion, accompanied by Madrid Trade Attache Novita Sari, Economic Coordinator of the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid Bayu Hari Saktiawan, Head of ITPC Barcelona Freddy Josep Pelawi, and Deputy Head of ITPC Barcelona Ratih Supriyati.

The Alimentaria 2022 exhibition was officially opened by the King Felipe VI of Spain, who also visited the Indonesian Pavilion. Ambassador Muhammad Najib welcomed King Felipe VI and showed some of the products displayed at the Indonesian Pavilion, including the Indonesian GI products.

In a press statement, Madrid Trade Attache Novita Sari said that Indonesia continues to strengthen the export momentum of Indonesian food, beverages, and products certified with Geographical Indication. The Government of Indonesia is currently negotiating with the European Union to incorporate the protection of selected Indonesian GIs within the framework of the Indonesia–EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA).

"To date, Indonesia has selected 47 GI products to be covered under the I-EU CEPA, including Adan Krayan Rice, Muntok White Pepper, Sumbawa Honey, Kintamani Arabica Coffee, Sumbawa Horse Milk, Flores Bajawa Arabica Coffee, Cianjur Pandanwangi Rice, and Dieng Carica. All of these products have been notified by the European Union and are currently going through the stage of public consultation by EU member states," Novita said.

During the exhibition, 30 potential buyers from spice distributors, the Horeca industry (hotel, restaurant, and cafe), frozen food manufacturers, and the retail sector expressed their interest in Indonesian GIs. One of the spice distributors in Spain said that the product quality and authenticity assurance provided by GI certification was what drew more of his attention.

Fourteen selected Indonesian GIs were sent to Spain and featured in Alimentaria 2022 Exhibition, including Siaw Nutmeg, Minahasa Clove, Atinggola Palm Sugar, Moloku Kie Raha Clove, East Luwu Pepper, Koerintji Cinnamon, Java Preanger Tea, Adan Krayan Rice, Krayan Mountain Salt, Bali Amed Salt, Muntok White Pepper and Sumbawa Honey as well as Gayo Arabica Coffee and Kolunprogo Coconut Sugar. Participation of these authentic Indonesian GI products was sponsored by ARISE+ Indonesia in the prominent international B2B trade fairs to strengthen international market linkages for the Indonesian GIs.

Sayuti Abdul Karim, the Chairman of the official GI lodger of Moloku Kie Raha Clove, the GI Protection Communities (MPIG), extended his gratitude to ARISE+ Indonesia and expressed his hope that the participation in the international trade fairs would expand and open a new market for Moloku Kie Raha Clove in the European market.

During the four-day exhibition, Chef Bara's cooking station attracted a lot of interest and enthusiasm. The delightful aroma of Indonesian Spiced Lamb Fried Rice, Spanish Albondigas, Chicken Butter Rice, and Churros attracted many visitors to watch the cooking demo and taste the food samples using GI-certified ingredients. One of the visitors commented that the GI-certified Siaw Nutmeg has added a distinct flavour and aroma to the Chicken Butter Rice dish.
