Fortune smiles on Abdul Jalil during the SIAL InterFOOD expo, the world's number one food innovation network, held in Jakarta, 9-12 November 2022. His 2037 miles (3278 km) journey from Fakfak Regency in West Papua Island in Eastern Indonesia was not in vain. Abdul Jalil is the Chairman of Geographical Indication Protection Communities (MPIG or local GI Association) of Tomandin Fakfak Nutmeg, a top-quality local nutmeg commodity that has been certified Geographical Indication (GI) No. IDG 000000049 by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (MoLHR) in 2016. Abdul Jalil's mission, facilitated by ARISE+ Indonesia, to promote Fakfak's origin nutmeg resulted in a business deal with one of the big Indonesian exporters to supply 12 tons of premium quality mace for exporting to India.
"We, Tomandin Fakfak Nutmeg GI Association and the farmers are very grateful for this business deal. Thank you, ARISE+ Indonesia," Abdul Jalil said with his face beaming with a smile.
Abdul Jalil was not the only one blessed with good fortune. He, together with representatives from Gayo Arabica Coffee, Flores Bajawa Arabica Coffee, and Moloku Kie Raha Clove, met with a potential buyer from Egypt who was interested in buying Indonesian GI products. A leading Indonesian food supplier with networks in France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain met with MPIGs representatives and expressed his interest in promoting Indonesian GIs in the international market.
Fakfak Tomandin Nutmeg and 20 other Indonesian GI products were exhibited at the SIAL InterFOOD with support from the Directorate of Export Development for Primary Product, the Ministry of Trade in close collaboration with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, MoLHR, and ARISE+ Indonesia.
The featured 21 Indonesian GIs were Adan Krayan Rice, North Kalimantan; Alor Island Vanilla, East Nusa Tenggara; Atinggola Palm Sugar, North Gorontalo, Sulawesi; Bali Amed Salt, Bali; Bali Kusamba Salt, Bali; Berau Cacao, East Kalimantan; East Luwu Pepper, South Sulawesi; Flores Bajawa Coffee, East Nusa Tenggara; Flores Manggarai Arabica Coffee, East Nusa Tenggara; Gayo Arabica Coffee, Aceh; Java Preanger Tea, West Java; Koerintji Cinnamon, Jambi, Sumatra; Krayan Mountain Salt, North Kalimantan; Kulonprogo Jogja Coconut Sugar, DI.
