Technical Assistance I

From 21-25 November 2022, planners at the Macroeconomics Directorate Bappenas took part in the Economic Modelling training in Jakarta facilitated by ARISE+ Indonesia.

During the four-day training, Thomas Warnock, Senior Economist and Elliot Garside, Assistant Economist from Oxford Economics, guided the participants to simulate the energy and emissions model that will allow different directorates to assess the macroeconomic and fiscal impact of climate policies, including carbon taxes, increased electrification, carbon capture, and investment in renewables.

Since 2019, ARISE+ Indonesia, through Oxford Economics provided support to Bappenas in the development of a trade and investment model, macroeconomic evaluation of several flagship policies, including the investment analysis on the economic recovery of six sub-sectors following the pandemic, including the chemical industry, pharmaceutical and electric vehicles, and the import substitution program of up to 35% in 2022 in the context of the national recovery.

"The economic modelling is essential to quantify the economic impacts of the targeted policies," Warnock said.

Rufita Hasanah, the Coordinator for National and Regional Macroeconomic Framework, Bappenas, one of the training participants, said, "We greatly appreciate the continued support from ARISE+ Indonesia in improving our technical skills and knowledge, especially in building tailored macroeconomic model for Indonesia and deliver capacity building for planners."

Muzakki Sani, the Junior Planner at the Directorate of Macro Planning & Statistical Analysis, Bappenas, shared a similar sentiment.

"The analytical tool, complemented with capacity building facilitated by ARISE+ Indonesia, has significantly supported us in developing a more robust and comprehensive macroeconomic framework and forecasting to feed the sustainable national development planning."
