Technical Assistance II

The pivotal role of metrology in maintaining accurate measurements and ensuring precision across diverse fields cannot be overstated. Recognising its significance, the Deputy for National Measurement Standards (SNSU) of the National Standardization Agency (BSN) collaborated with ARISE+ Indonesia to conduct a comprehensive series of training sessions focusing on metrology. The training, which is scheduled from July to November 2023, aims to enhance the competence and capacity of metrologists within the agency.
The comprehensive training program encompasses four general topics designed for all SNSU BSN staff, in addition to five specialised technical subjects tailored to participants from their corresponding laboratories. Commencing on 31 July 2023, the training program began with an in-depth exploration of the fundamental theory of metrology. Over the course of six days, half-day training sessions were delivered online. This was followed by the second series of training sessions, focusing on quality management, which is also scheduled in a half-day online format from 11-21 August 2023. The remaining two general topics, human resources management and statistics, are planned to take place between August and October 2023.
The specialised modules encompass areas such as vibration, mass (dead weight), force and torque, radio frequency, and geodetics. Customised for participants from their corresponding laboratories, each module equips them with the exact skills required for their specialised fields. Complementing the online theoretical courses, practical training will be organised in the laboratories with the guidance of experts.
The commencement of the training was marked by an opening ceremony delivered by the Deputy Chairman of BSN for SNSU, Y. Kristianto Widiwardono. Addressing the participants, Mr Kristianto emphasised the integral connection between metrology and the advancement of science and technology. He highlighted that as technology advances, the demand for precise measurements increases to guarantee accuracy. He also underscored the pivotal role of metrology in national quality infrastructure.
Mr Kristianto stated, "Metrology holds multifaceted significance, including safeguarding our consumers in trade and healthcare."
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the virtual format, Mr Kristianto encouraged participants to actively engage in the training, emphasising the importance of interaction for effective learning. He stressed that the training could greatly expand the knowledge of SNSU BSN staff in metrology.
The training sessions were facilitated by ARISE+ Indonesia's senior expert, Dr Wynand Louw, from the National Metrology Institute of South Africa. Dr Louw brought valuable insights and expertise to the participants, fostering a global exchange of knowledge.
Nurul Alfiyati, a Metrologist at the Laboratory for Length Measurement, enthusiastically shared her insights after participating in the training. She underscored how the training holds significance not just for her personal growth but also for the advancement of SNSU BSN, which holds a pivotal role as the highest institution in national metrology. Considering this, Nurul highlighted that metrologists at SNSU BSN have the duty to provide meticulous, all encompassing, and accurate analyses.
Nurul elaborated, "The training facilitated by ARISE+ Indonesia was exceptionally valuable, especially given its direct delivery by Dr Louw, who holds the esteemed role of President of CIPM. The content he presented profoundly enriched our understanding, particularly concerning the international advancement of metrology. I am confident that this training will improve our knowledge and expertise, consequently enhancing the quality of our analyses. As a result, we will be better equipped to disseminate knowledge and provide exemplary services to laboratories throughout Indonesia."
