A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In addition, the quality, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin. Since the quality depend on the geographical place of production, there is a clear link between the product and its original place of production.

Currently, Indonesia has 87 registered GI products, and through the ARISE+ Indonesia project technical assistance is being provided to GI farmers and producer associations. During September and December (2019) training was delivered to enhance the capacities of farmer communities and GI producer associations across the value chain of their products, from the farm, right through to the commercialisation to exporters, as well as participating in trade events in Indonesia and internationally.

The objective of the training was to address the various knowledge and capacity gaps that producers face, such as (i) understanding of GIs as a quality scheme, (ii) building awareness around the quality of a product and its consistency over time, (iii) knowledge of legal protection of GIs, (iv) control and traceability, and (v) marketing and promotion of the products. The technical assistance team visited the farmers in their producer environments and helped address some of the day to day challenges that they face. The training was delivered in close collaboration with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property from the Ministry of Law and Human rights.
